Patient reviews can be a touchy subject among health systems and physicians, there’s often debate over the place unvalidated reviews should have (or not) in healthcare. But the truth is that reviews can provide vital insight into a physician’s practice and even better news is that physicians have an opportunity to determine the quality of these reviews with patient surveys.

Our product expert, RN and Clinical Quality Specialist, Ann Baker chatted recently with the folks at Future Healthcare Today, discussing the importance of patient feedback in the social media age and how health systems can be proactive about the use of social media as it relates to the care and patient experience they provide. Ann says online reviews don’t have to be something that “happens” to a practice but can be extremely valuable to physicians and health systems. Those that actively pursue patient feedback have an advantage over those who don’t as they have a steady flow of real-time feedback from which to improve their organizations. They also have the opportunity to direct positive feedback to online review sites, mobilizing their patients to build online reputations for them. Given that 84% of consumers trust an online review as much as they do a recommendation from friends or family, a physician’s online reputation can play a big role in the growth (or lack of) of the practice.

“Reviews affect how potential patients view your organization, which can be unnerving for some providers,” said Baker. But if providers are diligent in their social and survey monitoring, patient reviews can have a positive effect on their practice.
